Class 6 is all about medication safety.

Medication management is one of the most critical responsibilities in assisted living and memory care home. Here are the few areas covered in this class.

The Seven Rights: A Foundation for Safety

The seven rights serve as a practical framework for preventing errors and ensuring consistency across shifts and caregivers. Many times, mistakes happen when the med tech assumes he/she knows the routine, and failed to double check. Prescriptions can change, dosage can change, the seven rights create a structured process that supports both accuracy and accountability

Technology and Documentation

The session highlighted the eMAR system (electronic Medication Administration Record) as a powerful safeguard. Unlike paper charts, eMAR has a built-in triple-check system, flags inconsistencies, and prompts staff when something looks off. But technology alone isn’t enough. Staff must also document refusals, side effects, and any changes immediately.

Safe Storage and Secure Systems

Medication safety doesn’t stop with administration. Storage is equally critical. Medications must be kept behind two locked doors to prevent accidental or intentional access. Staff should also perform regular audits to ensure no doses are missing or misplaced.

Another point raised in training: never crush medications without provider approval, especially for residents with swallowing difficulties. Doing so can change how the drug is absorbed and lead to dangerous outcomes. Instead, care plans should specify alternative routes or forms when necessary.

Communication: The Bridge Between Families and Providers

Perhaps the strongest theme of the training was communication. Families need to understand what medications their loved ones are taking, why they are prescribed, and what side effects to watch for. Trainers shared an eye-opening story about a family member who stopped giving a prescribed medication at home because they didn’t understand its importance. This led to severe behavioral changes in the resident once they returned to the care setting.

Collaboration with healthcare providers is equally essential. Caregivers are encouraged to share observations—such as new side effects or frequent refusals—at interdisciplinary team meetings so that providers can adjust prescriptions safely.

A Culture of Vigilance and Respect

At Anthera, we see medication safety as a cornerstone of trust and dependable care. Families entrust us with their loved ones, and through rigorous training, systems, and compassionate communication, we strive to honor that trust every day.
